ESET, through security analysts, has reported that a number of Android applications have been found to be secretly recording user audio and stealing sensitive data. This spyware, called VajraSpy, is claimed to be spread through social engineering methods on the aforementioned messaging platforms and others.

The researchers narrate how the people behind the attack make the targets trust them and later on persuade them to migrate to some other chatting app. The impersonated apps contain the spyware inside them. The moment the malware is installed, the spyware starts the collection of contacts, messages, call logs, location data, and it can also record ongoing conversations and sounds in the vicinity. Furthermore, it collects information about the device like model, OS version, and network IDs, and sends everything to the remote attackers.

Among the suspicious apps identified in this operation are TikTalk, MeetMe, Let's Chat, Quick Chat, Chit Chat, YohooTalk, Hello Cha, Rafaqat, Privee Talk, Nidus, GlowChat, and Wave Chat. Google has taken these apps off from the Play Store, but the devices that have them installed previously are still at risk. The public is urged to inspect their phones and delete any dubious apps manually.

In order to protect oneself against spyware such as VajraSpy, the hackers' main choice avoidance of APKs from unreliable sources, especially those received through chat apps. The official app stores are still the safest places to obtain apps from, and users should always check the developer's name, app rating, permissions asked, and recent user reviews.

Updating Android devices, using Google Play Protect, and restricting app permissions to only the ones necessary are some of the other protective measures. Users should be on the lookout for indications of compromise like quick battery drain, unanticipated data usage, frequent permission pop-ups, or unfamiliar texts sent from their device.

Despite using an Android antivirus app that is reliable, it is still recommended to install one. The mentioned software can spot malware through their constant scans and offer other features such as VPNs and scam alerts to improve privacy. Moreover, experts support the idea that even the oldest spyware attacks represent risks, which point out the need to have only few apps installed for easier handling and security.

Through the case of ESET, it has been proved that vigilance is irreplaceable when it comes to Android users. Besides, if they perform regular checks on their devices, do not install apps out of caution and are aware of the unusual behavior, then they are sure that their sensitive information is not going to their oppressors.
